If you’ve been following Carl and Princess Donut’s journey from the beginning, prepare yourself emotionally. A Parade of Horribles delivers some of the biggest emotional payoffs in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series while still providing the humor, action, and chaos that fans have come to expect.

A Parade of Horribles
by Matt Dinniman
(Audiobook Narrated by Jeff Hays)
πI was fortunate enough to read an early e-ARC of A Parade of Horribles. I also purchased the hardcover and audiobook editions. All opinions are my own.

π The Premise
A Parade of Horribles continues Carl and Princess Donut’s fight for survival as the dungeon becomes even more dangerous and unpredictable. As the eighth installment in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, this is absolutely not a starting point for new readers. However, longtime fans will find plenty of emotional moments, character growth, and surprises waiting for them.
One recommendation I have for readers is to read the Backstage at the Pineapple Cabaret story πfrom the hardcover editions before diving into Book 8. I think it adds valuable context and enhances the overall reading experience.

π₯ Karaoke Steals the Show
What stood out most to me was Carl’s development in this book. In this book we see Carl reach a new level of emotional development. The story brings back the side of Carl that isn’t simply trying to survive at all costβ he’s trying to do right by the people he cares about. You really see Carl experience devastation as the number of survivors dwindles. Carl is also sorrowful for things he has to do and lines he has to cross that he never anticipated crossing.
For audiobook listeners… Carl’s singing totally stole the show (sorry, Donut). π€ And who knew Prepotente could sing?!
Princess Donut is the best, as always. I’ve always loved her character, and this book felt like another major step in her growth. I particularly loved the way she handled confrontation throughout the story. Donut continues to balance humor, confidence, vulnerability, and emotional depth in a way that makes her one of the most memorable characters in the series.
I also wasn’t prepared for how emotional this book would make me. Every time there was a thank-you note or acknowledgment involving Princess Donut, I found myself getting teary-eyed. After spending so much time with these characters throughout the series, those moments carried a surprising amount of weight.
One small disappointment was that I wanted more Mordecai. While the cast remains fantastic, I found myself missing his presence and wishing he had a larger role in the story. I also missed seeing Katia on the pages but was happy to see some of the other characters interact more and have their moments to shine.

β±οΈ Pacing & Progression
One of the biggest improvements for me was the pacing.
While I liked This Inevitable Ruin (like a long game of Risk), I felt that A Parade of Horribles moved at a much faster pace. The story kept me fully engaged from beginning to end while still allowing space for emotional character moments and important plot developments.
The momentum never really slowed down, making this one of the quickest reads in the series for me.

π§ Audiobook Experience
Jeff Hays outdid himself once again.
If you are not yet listening to the Dungeon Crawler Carl series on audiobook, what are you even doing???
The Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks have always been exceptional, but the singing and musical elements in this installment were particularly impressive. Those scenes added another layer to the listening experience and made several moments even more memorable.
And using different voices during the transformation sequence was perfection.
I experienced this story through the eARC, hardcover, and audiobook, and the audiobook remains my favorite way to experience the series.

β¨ Final Thoughts
A Parade of Horribles delivered everything I wanted from a Dungeon Crawler Carl novel: emotional payoff, character growth, action, humor, and outstanding narration.
This book made me laugh. It made me cry. It reminded me why Princess Donut remains one of my favorite characters in modern fantasy.
And perhaps most importantly:
Someone needs to make a slug plushie immediately.
The slugs are still hilarious, adorable and unhinged all at the same time.

π₯ Rating & Spice Level
πΆοΈ Spice Level: πΆοΈ (For the adult humor, language and sexual innuendo, not the romance)
βοΈ Star Rating: βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
In conclusion… Princess Donut would absolutely demand a higher rating for herself and insist that Carl’s score be lower.
