💜 The Premise
Tales from the Territory brings readers back into the cozy fantasy world of Legends & Lattes through a collection of short stories featuring both familiar faces and new characters. The stories give readers glimpses into characters’ lives before and after the events we’ve already experienced, while also expanding the world beyond Viv’s coffee shop. This book features two previously released stories and three stories released for the first time. It also contains beautiful illustrations in the book.
We get everything from murder and intrigue with a pocket-loving goblin named Zyll to the story of how Thimble found his way toward the family he would eventually discover at Legends & Lattes. We also get a glimpse into Tandri’s life as an art student struggling against the expectations placed upon her as a succubus, as well as a longer story that returns to the café when a new competitor threatens what Viv and Tandri have built.
The result is less about pushing one overarching plot forward and more about getting another opportunity to spend time in this world—and learning a little more about some of the characters we’ve already grown to love. While I think you can read these short stories without having read the other books in Baldree’s word, I found that the best part of the stories was already knowing these characters and getting to know them even more.

📚 The Tales
🗡️ Goblins & Greatcoats
“Goblins & Greatcoats” felt like a low-stakes fantasy version of Clue. At its heart, it’s a classic whodunit, complete with murder, suspects, and an investigation into what actually happened. What made the story especially fun for me was its underestimated inspector. While everyone else is caught up in the chaos, the inspector is quietly observing everything, processing the details, and seeing far more than anyone gives them credit for.
This story drops you directly into the middle of chaos and initially I had absolutely no idea what was going on. Somehow, that worked for me. Much like the goblin who arrives in the middle of the chaos, I felt like I simply walked into the inn, ignored everything happening around me, sat down, and decided to enjoy myself.

🐭 Just a Thimbleful
“Just a Thimbleful” shows the humble beginnings of Thimble, who works as a cook for an estate, just as his father did before him. His creativity is stifled by repetition and strict, simple menus, leaving him with little opportunity to explore his love of creative baking until Thimble finds himself at the door of Legends & Lattes.
This was a lovely origin story for Thimble. I loved getting to see where his passion for baking began and how he eventually found his way to the place (and the people) where that creativity could flourish. It also made me realize something I hadn’t really considered when I first read Legends & Lattes. While Viv was embarking on a new adventure and pursuing her newfound dream of bringing coffee to the people, Thimble was doing the same thing with his baked goods. They were both taking a chance on a new dream and finally getting the opportunity to explore something they loved.
Heartwarming. Simply, heartwarming.

📚 Pages to Fill
“Pages to Fill” is a fun return to Viv’s adventuring days before Legends & Lattes. Viv and her questing party, including Roon and Gallina, have been hired to track down a thief named Bodkin. The story gives readers another glimpse of who Viv was before she traded adventuring for coffee. I enjoyed that the story doesn’t simply become a chase or fight sequence as the group hunts Bodkin down. Instead, the search takes Viv into parts of the city and introduces her to experiences that she never anticipated encountering as part of the quest.
“Pages to Fill” was one of those stories that reminded me how much I enjoy Baldree’s observations about knowledge, stories, and the people who preserve them. I actually stopped reading at one point to copy a passage into my journal because the idea behind it stuck with me long after I turned the page.

🎨 Mirograph
“Mirograph” features another familiar face from Legends & Lattes, Tandri, years before the events of the novel, while she’s still a student at Ackers University. Tandri becomes an assistant to a professor working at the intersection of science and magic, giving readers a glimpse into her life before she eventually finds her way to Viv and Legends & Lattes.
This is a beautiful, artistic story that, at times, is both sad and haunting. Without giving too much away, “Mirograph” actually made me cry.
It really provides the reader with a deeper understanding of Tandri. A theme runs throughout the story of sharing oneself with the people who matter and allowing others to see the real you, beyond the surface or beyond what is expected of you. By the end, I felt like I had a much greater understanding of Tandri and the person she eventually becomes.

☕ Cavaliers & Coffees
“Cavaliers & Coffees” finds us back at Legends & Lattes, where our favorite coffee shop owner (Viv, Tandri, Thimble and Cal) discover that someone has copied Legends & Lattes almost exactly and is trying to steal their business and run them into the group.
In this story, Travis Baldree takes his familiar themes of found family and community to a new level. What starts as a threat to everything Viv, Tandri, and Thimble have built becomes a story about what actually makes Legends & Lattes special and it turns out that it is about far more than coffee.
I also loved seeing the relationship between Viv and Tandri at this point in their lives. The love between them is beautiful, but so is the way they remind one another of who they are and what they want Legends & Lattes to represent. Their relationship becomes an important reminder that the shop is about far more than simply selling coffee.

⏱️ Pacing & Progression
The stories in Tales from the Territory are quick and easy to read, making this an especially approachable collection. The shortest story, “Goblins & Greatcoats,” is only 24 pages, while the longest, “Cavaliers & Coffees,” comes in at 51 pages. The remaining stories are around 40 pages each, which gives each tale enough room to tell its own story without overstaying its welcome.
I also liked that the shorter format makes this a book you can easily pick up and read one tale at a time. Or, if you’re anything like me, tell yourself you’re only going to read one more story and suddenly find yourself halfway through the next one.

✨ Final Thoughts
I also have to mention the artwork throughout the collection, which is absolutely beautiful. I’m usually happy to switch between print and audio, but this was one book I was especially glad I read rather than listened to. The illustrations added so much to the experience, and I would have hated to miss them.
Ultimately, Tales from the Territory feels like a chance to spend just a little more time in a world I wasn’t ready to leave, with familiar characters, new adventures, beautiful artwork, and all the cozy found-family magic I’ve come to love from Travis Baldree.
