I went into Star Shipped expecting a fiery, mutual rivalry… but what I got instead was something more one-sided, and honestly, more compelling. 🚀

💜 The Premise
The story follows co-stars of a sci-fi tv show, Simon and Charlie, whose dynamic is shaped less by equal rivalry and more by Simon’s perspective—creating a tension that feels different from the typical enemies-to-lovers or rivals-to-lovers setup.
⸻
💥 The Dynamic
What really worked for me was how that imbalance played out. A lot of the rivalry feels driven and understood by Simon, which adds layers to their relationship and makes the progression feel more intentional. I loved how the characters interacted in different manners at different stages of the novel.

🎧 The Narration
I also have to mention the narration—Joel Leslie has such a distinct voice that I recognized him immediately from his narration in What Are Friends For by Wade Rouse (you can read my full review here), and he adds so much personality to the story.
The story also uses elements such as online fan commentary. While in some books, this kind of element can lose its impact with narration, Joel Leslie does a wonderful job of keeping this element alive.
⸻
🔥 The Slow Burn
The slow burn here is incredibly well done. The buildup feels natural, and when the relationship finally shifts, the payoff feels earned.
This is an emotional slow burn, while the physical spice doesn’t take long to show up.
